Hi, this is Eben Freeman at Tailor Restaurant
in New York City.
The Bloody Mary is one of those drinks
whose origin is hotly disputed.
It's a drink also that really
you can add your creativity to.
There's a million variations to this drink,
and you can really do anything you like.
You can throw curry into this.
You can do wasabi and do it Asian style.
Here at the restaurant my bartender Troy Arken
does a version where we use tomatillo juice
instead of tomato juice and habanero chillies and cilantro.
So really this is a pallet in which
for you to paint your own picture.
The drink originally apparently was made in Paris perhaps,
and it was supposedly made for Ernest Hemingway.
And it was made because his wife was not allowing him
to drink at the time, and he needed a drink in which
he couldn't smell the booze on his breath.
So he started drinking Vodka,
and he started drinking it with tomato juice and spices
to disguise the scent of alcohol.
So to do an individual one you're just gonna start off
with the basic ingredients.
Little bit of hot sauce.
Little bit of fresh black pepper.
Some Worcestershire sauce.
Little pinch of salt.
And some prepared or fresh horseradish.
This is fresh horseradish.
I think it makes a huge difference,
but in making a single one like this
really there isn't too much difference if your using
Then you can add your Vodka.
In this case an ounce and a half of Vodka.
You're gonna top that with about two ounces
of tomato juice.
Simply add a little bit of ice to your glass.
And then take another glass of the same size and shape,
and roll it back and forth between your two glasses
to mix it.
Fill your glass with ice.
Top it off with some more tomato juice,
and then the garnishes.
Most traditional of course, is to simply to garnish that
with a celery slice.
Little bit of lemon juice really helps pick up
the flavors in that.
And that's a simple way of making a simple Bloody Mary.
Really the most pared down version of that drink.
