[Narrator] Opening a bottle of wine.
00:14
Opening a bottle of wine is a simple task,
00:16
but if done incorrectly,
00:17
you can run into trouble.
00:19
The key is to work slowly and carefully.
00:22
Practice helps too.
00:24
We'll use the sharp point of our bottle opener
00:26
to cut an X in the foil
00:27
and peel off the foil.
00:29
It's best to remove the entire foil
00:32
since in some vintage wines the foil contains lead.
00:38
Next, place the bottle on a flat, hard surface.
00:42
Firmly grasp the base of the bottle neck with one hand
00:44
and the corkscrew with the other.
00:47
Place the sharp point directly into the center of the cork
00:50
and screw straight down.
00:52
Begin turning the corkscrew clockwise
00:54
while applying even, steady pressure downwards
00:57
into the cork.
00:59
Be careful not to screw through to the other side,
01:01
or you'll have bits of cork
01:03
which would need to be strained out of your wine.
01:06
The pull level should rest on the lip of the bottle.
01:09
Once the cork is down most of the way,
01:11
pull up on the handle of the corkscrew,
01:13
making sure that you're pressing the lever down
01:15
on the lip of the bottle.
01:17
This will lift the cork out of the bottle.
01:21
Now, simply twist the cork off.
01:24
Make sure that the end of the cork
01:25
that was inside the bottle is moist.
01:28
This usually means that the wine has been stored well.
01:31
If the cork has dried out completely,
01:33
this may mean that the wine has spoiled.
01:36
Now that you've removed the cork,
01:38
pour and enjoy.
01:40
When pouring, fill your wine glass
01:42
only partially to allow room
01:43
for the wine vapors to fill the glass.
01:46
This helps you smell the wine better as you drink it,
01:48
giving it a better flavor.
