How to Make a Latte

A latte is espresso with steamed milk and a slight froth on top. Coffee expert Mike Phillips explains how a latte is different from a cappuccino, and how to balance the milk and espresso flavors.

What a latte is is essentially espresso

with steamed milk that has a slight bit of froth on the top.

Let's get some hot water in there to warm that up.

This is about a 12 ounce latte

so we're gonna pour a decent amount of milk in here.

This is about as large as you really want to go

with a latte if you're still looking

to pull out a fair amount of that espresso flavor

in the drink.

So you've got some fresh cold milk prepared.

We've got the cup preheating.

Now we're gonna pull our shots.

So as the shot is pulling,

we're gonna start steaming our milk.

Now since this is a latte,

we're not gonna add too much froth.

Just enough to give the milk a little bit of texture.

We want to create a nice whirlpool

for the steaming milk there to incorporate the milk

at the surface down into the bottom of the pitcher.

And bring that up to temperature

and give that cup just a little swirl

to even out the crema on the top.

And give the milk a little swirl

to get a polish on there.

You're gonna start off pouring fairly slowly

because you don't want to disturb too much

As it gets a little bit higher up,

you can speed up and then you come down

So a latte is basically a combination of espresso

It's gonna be larger than say a cappuccino
