I think it's an almond now,
but I'm not good with nuts.
All right, we're gonna identify and crack a nut.
This here is a chestnut.
Here we have three almonds.
I know they could be chestnuts, they could be walnuts,
maybe even hazelnuts.
I don't know my nuts.
Are these pistachios?
How do I open them?
[gasps] I have no idea.
I think I need to use goggles.
I mean, I guess we're going in.
I got a hammer kind of thing.
You do not need this, do you?
[man clicks tongue]
I can use this?
No, that's not it.
There's no way around it.
You need a mallet.
Okay, here we go.
I'm so sorry.
Put it between your fingers.
Well, that didn't go so well.
Just bang it, see what...
Is it supposed to be smooshed?
That's all I needed to do?
Oh my God.
There goes a walnut.
You wanna remove it from its shell,
kind of like a shy person,
the kid that sit in the back of the class
who's actually pretty funny.
Probably did that with too much force.
It's all broken; I hit it too hard.
I like, wish it was not as crumbled.
They don't appear intact, but they are there.
And I broke it.
I hit 'em too hard.
I think I destroyed that walnut.
I feel like Superman right now.
These are walnuts.
Three beautiful walnuts.
I love walnuts.
And I'm gonna crack this walnut for you.
This is a nutcracker.
And I'm gonna put this little bad boy in there.
And you have to put it in the center.
And put it in along the line.
And we're gonna hold it
so that it doesn't go into your eye.
Now, press too hard,
otherwise you'll break the entire nut in the middle.
Walnuts have a little seam right down the middle here,
and I would think that if you get the screwdriver
in the seam, and give it a little whack,
ooh look at that.
You want me to do it the way my mother used to do it?
There we go.
I don't wanna lose any of it,
so I'm gonna put it inside this towel.
There's this seam that it cracks open on,
so try putting that seam up
so your mallet hits right on the seam.
And you just kind of pull the bits out.
And then pick out the walnuts.
How to crack a walnut: use this thing.
Easiest thing you could do.
One opened walnut.
We're going to crack a walnut here,
and when you're looking at a walnut,
this is not a super difficult task,
but you do need to make sure
that you get the right end to start with.
You could take a walnut and put it on a cutting board
and bang it with a hammer no problem,
it will open that way, but that's a little bit messy;
there's shrapnel flying around your kitchen,
so not my favorite method.
When I'm looking at the walnut,
there's a pointier side and a flatter side.
They're all the same; they're all going to have this,
you just have to look closely.
The pointy side is where you don't wanna be.
Flip this guy over so that you can see the flatter side
on the bottom of the walnut,
and there usually is a little bit of a crack right in there,
and this is your point of entry into your walnut
if you wanna be a little more civilized
than somebody just banging it with a hammer.
From here on, you can use anything that's not sharp,
and what I mean by that is don't take the tip of a knife
and shove it into your walnut,
because you will cut your hand.
All right, so I'm just gonna use a screwdriver.
We're gonna go in gently, just enough that you can twist.
There it is.
Okay, and it should break cleanly in half like that.
We're gonna try something new.
I've never done this before, but just for fun,
we're gonna take the edge of a spatula,
because it's not sharp like a knife,
and so that means it's safe to use,
and it's relatively sturdy,
so theoretically, this should be all that we need.
Again, we're gonna find that open end.
Okay, we're gonna stick the corner of the spatula in there,
and we're gonna twist,
and we're gonna open our walnut that way.
If you don't have a spatula or a screwdriver,
you might want to use the actually tool for the job,
and that's a nutcracker.
And this guy is actually designed to do this,
and simply enough,
you're just putting the nut in between the nutcracker
and cracking it, and it comes apart.
Amazing how well the tool for the job works.
I got walnuts out of there.
