50 People Try to Crack a Coconut

One day, you will be in a market, and you will pass the coconuts. They will grab your attention. You'll say to yourself, "I'm going to buy this coconut." You settle at the register, and bring your groceries home. You put most of them away. As you hold up that last item, you will ask yourself: "Why did I buy this coconut?" At least we can help answer how to open it!

It's go time.
00:04
(lively violin music)
00:09
Wow.
00:10
Whew.
00:12
Am I gonna hang some shelves?
00:14
Here we go.
00:17
Ugh, how do I look?
00:19
Is this good?
00:20
I feel like you have to like puncture it first.
00:23
It's gotta have a weak spot.
00:25
Maybe this.
00:27
Can I just throw it or something?
00:29
What if I just went...
00:32
(continuous banging)
00:35
Maybe you use this with the hammer?
00:37
But I feel like I'm gonna hurt myself if I try.
00:40
I didn't need that thumb anyway.
00:41
Alright, let's go.
00:43
(continuous banging)
00:49
That's stupid.
00:50
I'm actually gonna wack it with a cleaver.
00:52
I feel like that's something I've seen before.
00:54
(continuous banging)
00:57
Ha!
01:00
Oh boy, that is not making nearly
01:03
as much headway as I thought it would.
01:05
Is it just brute force?
01:06
Is that all it is?
01:14
Oh!
01:15
(continuous banging)
01:22
Oh my God, its water broke!
01:25
(gasps)
01:31
There has to be a better way than this.
01:33
Okay, so...
01:34
This is something I know.
01:36
You wanna make two holes.
01:37
Air pressure.
01:41
(continuous banging)
01:42
Wanna get this water outta here first.
01:47
Okay.
01:48
I'm gonna just grab a hammer and try to make a piercing.
01:50
Find the center, you know.
01:52
(continuous banging)
01:59
There we go.
02:00
Open.
02:04
That's how you crack a coconut.
02:06
I usually just use a rock.
02:07
Don't nobody, we got screw drivers here.
02:11
You don't use that for food.
02:13
Notice you don't ever go to Home Depot,
02:14
see nobody cooking.
02:15
There's a reason for that.
02:22
So we're gonna crack a coconut here.
02:23
It is doable.
02:24
And there are some tricks and it might require
02:27
a little bit of safety precautions,
02:29
so the first thing we wanna do is get the coconut water out.
02:32
We're basically gonna hold a screw driver on the eyes,
02:35
which are here on the end.
02:36
And we're gonna poke through two of 'em.
02:41
And again here.
02:43
Alright, now we're just gonna drain the coconut water,
02:47
'cause we don't want to lose all that good coconut water,
02:50
and if we crack it without draining it first,
02:52
the coconut water's gonna end up on the floor.
02:54
Give it a little shake, sounds empty to me.
02:56
Now, here is the fun part.
02:59
We're going to take the hammer
03:01
and we're gonna crack this guy open.
03:02
Now there's three ridges
03:04
that are going to be most prominent.
03:05
And you can see if you look at the end of the coconut here,
03:08
come to the center of the coconut
03:09
and wack it right on that ridge.
03:12
And I've already got a crack.
03:13
Find the next prominent ridge on the coconut,
03:16
and there we go, crack continued.
03:20
Remember there's three of them,
03:21
so we're gonna find the third.
03:23
And we should be able to link all three together
03:26
with this last wack.
03:28
Yep, there we go.
03:30
Okay, and that's how we open the coconut.
03:33
I did it.
03:35
Let's go.
03:37
(joyous orchestra music)
03:42
Coconut isn't good.
03:44
You know what you do with this?
03:49
You throw it out.
03:50
